There’s an artistry to every movement of Robert Steinken’s hands - a sculptor’s precision guided by an intuitive understanding of beauty and balance.
Growing up in Toronto, Ontario area, Robert spent his early years working alongside his father as a mechanic - changing tires, doing oil changes, and learning the kind of discipline and attention to detail that would later define his approach to hair.
Robert’s path to beauty was neither straight nor simple. After long days in beauty school, he waited tables to cover tuition, then cut hair late into the night. His Aunt Smokey, a spirited salon owner, became one of his first mentors, taking him to hair shows and introducing him to industry legends like Sabino Di Tacchio, a world champion stylist who recognized Robert’s eye for transformation. Robert learned that technique could be taught, but artistry had to be cultivated. He also drew inspiration from Pierre Alexandre, the influential British hairstyling icon, whose techniques continue to shape Robert’s work to this day.
A defining moment came at a hair competition early in his career. He’d arrived without a model and approached nearly every woman he saw until one said yes. He cut her long hair into a short, modern style - and won first prize. “That was the moment I realized I might actually have talent,” he recalls with a laugh. “But talent means nothing without discipline.”
Making Hairstory with GenLux
GenLux Magazine creative director Stephen Kamifuji pitched a story to Robert, and they instantly saw the potential to honor the history of hair styles. The piece would celebrate beauty icons from the 1950s through the 1970s, very much a collaboration where the photographer, creative director, models and hair stylist work together. Stars Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Twiggy, Farrah Fawcett, and Jane Fonda were decided upon, each representing a moment when hair defined an era - and an attitude.
The process was intensely collaborative - photographer, models, and stylist working in rhythm to reinterpret classic looks for a new generation. The challenge: finding models whose natural hair could be styled to embody each icon while showing that any hair type could achieve the look. Robert relied on Giovanni’s professional-grade products for texture, hold, and sheen, crafting each look on the spot. “We achieved those results quickly - and without compromise,” he says. “That’s the power of a product that performs.”

Wisdom for the Next Generation
Robert’s advice to aspiring stylists is as grounded as it is generous. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Watch, learn, and take every opportunity you can. Apply yourself with every fiber of your being - combine skill with art. The experience you get just from watching is a gift.”
Even after decades in the industry, his passion remains undimmed. He continues to refine his craft, mentor younger artists, and dream of one day creating a salon that feels like a creative sanctuary - “a place where you walk in and walk out feeling beautiful, inside and out.”
Closing Reflection
For Robert Steinken, hair has never been just hair. It’s form, texture, light, and story - a reflection of character and confidence.
“Hair, like art or design, tells a story of who we are in the moment,” he says. “The right light, the right cut, the right product - that’s where the magic lives.”
For over 30 years, Robert has lent his artistry to dozens of A-list stars. His work bridges eras and extremes - from the iconic Farrah Fawcett’s feathered perfection to Angelina Jolie’s red-carpet edge, Kerry Washington’s commanding elegance, and the understated grace of Sally Field.
