How to Blow-Dry Your Hair Like a Pro

What Are the Most Important Blow-Drying Tips?

Use these blow-drying techniques for salon-quality results:

  • Gently remove excess water with a microfiber towel before blow-drying.
  • Apply a heat protectant before blow-drying.
  • Use your dryer’s concentrator nozzle to focus airflow and help prevent frizz.
  • Divide your hair into five sections: one on top and four below. Blow-dry each section individually.

Wondering how to achieve a salon-quality blow-out from the comfort of home? We’re sharing expert blow-drying tips to help you avoid common blunders and keep your locks smooth, shiny, and voluminous. Here’s how to blow-dry your hair like a professional stylist.

Cleanse & Condition

Before you start blow-drying, it’s important to cleanse and condition your hair. This essential step ensures that oils, dirt, and residual hair products don’t get “baked” into your tresses. Locking in moisture also helps to prevent heat damage.

Gently Remove Excess Moisture

Use a microfiber towel (or soft cotton T-shirt) to gently squeeze and blot out excess water until your hair is 50-60% dry.

This step is vital because studies have shown that repeated cycles of wetting and blow-drying can crack hair cuticles. Furthermore, blow-drying hair while it’s wet can cause cuticle scales to open wider, which makes your hair vulnerable to dehydration.

Apply a Heat Protectant

This step is especially critical as you learn how to blow-dry your hair. Even if you use expert blow-drying techniques, failing to protect your tresses can lead to stressed-out strands and potentially even severely damaged hair.

Apply a Giovanni® Eco Chic Beauty Heat Protector, and comb it through evenly to help lock in moisture and help prevent dryness and thermal damage.

Rough Dry

Attach the concentrator nozzle to your blow-dryer to focus the airflow and help prevent frizz and flyaways. Set your dryer to high airflow and medium heat. “Rough dry” your hair until it’s around 80% dry.

Section Your Hair

Clip the hair on top of your crown into place. Divide the hair below into four separate sections and use clips to secure them. This blow-drying tip ensures that each strand dries evenly.

Blow-Dry Each Section

Now that the prep work is done, here’s how to blow-dry your hair.

Working from roots to tips, dry each section individually. Place a round brush near the roots and slowly pull down the hair shafts with consistent tension in a forward-and-out motion.

Follow the brush with the dryer. “Chasing the brush” is a blow-drying technique that helps set the hair’s shape, helps stop frizz, and helps smooth the cuticles.

Blow-Dry the Top

Remove the clip from the section on the top of your crown. Use your round brush to lift the hair at the roots. Working from roots to tips, rotate the brush in a forward-and-out motion while following the brush with the dryer.

Use Cold Air

Now that you’ve successfully learned how to blow-dry your hair, it’s time for the finish. Remove the clips. Shake out your hair. Use your dryer’s cool shot setting for 10-15 seconds to help seal the cuticles and lock the hairstyle in place.
