1960

A pioneer, Arthur Guidotti

Before there was a brand, there was a pioneer. Arthur Guidotti had a vision and a love for all things hair. He began developing his passion as a hairstylist in Holly­wood and Beverly Hills. He worked for a time with hair­ stylist icon Gene Shacove and was good friends with "the father of hair color," Al Lapin.

1968

On sunset, a bustling salon

By the 1960s, Arthur was maturing his talents and decided to open his own salon, called On Sunset. The salon was a bustling site on the famous Sunset Strip, and a hit with many of the Hollywood celebri­ties, including Lucille BalL Today Giovanni continues lo work with a variety of celebrity hairstylists. who share the same love for Giovanni products. Growing up in a salon planted a seed in Arthur's son James. It would become the start of his love for hair care and an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit. James would regularly spend his Saturday mornings sweeping up hair, fetching coffee and running errands for the eccentric clientele, in return for handfuls of change.

1979

First steps towards innovation

After years of exposure to harsh chemicals, present in many salon products, Arthur's hands start to react. His son James recalls seeing the din, light appear in the middle of the night and finding his father doctoring the sores on his hands. As a result, Arthur would begin exploring the possibility of his own full line of professional hair care products.

Arthur and his son could often be found in Los Ange­les' Chinatown purchasing raw herbs wrapped in Chi­nese newspaper along with a variety of exotic essen­tial oils of the time, such as Tea Tree and Jojoba oil to take back to their garage and experiment with.

Giovanni was one of the first companies to formulate Tea Tree oil in hair care and continued to drive inno­vation in the hair care category by harnessing the benefits of charcoal and volcanic ash. Forty years later, Giovanni's Tea Tree Shampoo remains one of the number-one-selling hair care products in the United States Natural Products Industry. 

1980

The early years

By 1979, Arthur and his business partner Peter Stathis had founded Giovanni. As a result, James' childhood would become marked by numerous trade show events, and memories of loading the car with his father and packing the trunk with the iconic Giovanni blue neon sign, banners, product samples and swag. James still remembers fondly the tunes he and Peter would make up while driving to Las Vegas from sunny Southern California. 

When chance meets opportunity

With only $2,000 in the Giovanni bank account, out of necessity Arthur challenges the faux pas of the day and purchases black closeout packaging to launch his products (the least expensive packaging avail­able). Coincidentally, Giovanni successfully stands out among the competition.

Arthur soon begins color coding his products on a black canvas, creating a distinct, chic look. Giovanni is one of the first companies to color code their prod­ucts. Arthur's son James continued the Giovanni stream of innovation as the only natural hair care company willing to take the risk of developing complex, innovative and patented packaging molds in the late 1990s.

1986

Off on a wild ride

With only three employees and 12 products, the company was off on a wild ride selling to movie studios such as MGM, Paramount and Fox. Today Giovanni continues to serve the movie industry by providing product to celebrity hair­stylists and stagehands. 

1990

Hard work pays off

In the mid-1990s. James quickly became the driving force behind Giovanni's growth. Despite being on active duly in the military, James corresponds with buyers over the phone and visits retailers while on leave, landing Giovanni in their first major retail account - Fred Meyer. Now a veteran, James continues full speed ahead driving around Los Angeles and Beverly hills from salon lo salon, introducing them to Giovanni products. A challenging feat with no appointment and having a then unknown brand. But quickly this obscure brand soon became the leading hair care brand in the United Stales Natural Products Industry.

1995

A visionary, G. James Guidotti

James would become the visionary who would take Giovanni to new heights.

Growing up in salons and the beauty industry created an impact on the way James saw and felt about hair care. Before Giovanni natural hair care was generic and lifeless. James knew there was something missing in the natural world, but he didn't know what. He wanted to create a fashion-forward company to meet the needs of the natural consumer.

James was not only impacted by his father, James' mother Yeona, also had impeccable style. Yeona’s fashion and aura also became an inspiration. James wanted to be the "Valentino" of natural hair care. Growing up Sebastian International (founded by John and Geri Sebastian) was one of his favorite hair care brands because it was cutting-edge and fashion-forward.

2001

A world of sophistication (Magnetics)

James pulled from his father's affinity for magnetic healing and worked with Dr. Daniel Brehmer to patent the Magnetic range of hair care products. This cutting-edge hair care line harnesses the complexity and science of attraction. Giovanni's continued innovation offers the natural consumer a world of sophistication never before seen in the natural channel.

Magnetic Density Level (MDL)™ 

Each Giovanni Magnetic Hair Care Product has a specific Magnetic Density Level. The higher the number the greater the amount of Magnetite used in the product. So, a Level 10 has twice as much Magnetite as a Level 5. The greater the level of Magnetite, the greater conditioning properties the product possesses. Also, with increased Magnetite comes increased benefits from magnetic therapy for hair and scalp. Of course. Giovanni uses only the highest-quality Magnetite available to ensure pure, sustained magnetic energy. 

2005

Erasing the lines between natural & professional 
hair care

Innovation was the key to Giovanni's success in the natural products industry. Giovanni was always pushing the envelope in the natural world. They used edgy models al trade shows. which oftentimes generated a mail room full of complaints and criticism. The company was selling up photo shoots when the rest of the industry was relying on stock photography.

In time Giovanni successfully erases the line between natural and professional hair care and consumers embrace the fact that “Beauty from the Elements is Chic on the Street.” 

The continual search for the perfect raw ingredients leads to the development of the D:lox products in 2008, well before the benefits of activated charcoal became common.

James pulled from his father's use of volcanic ash (used in Giovanni formulas as early as the late 1970s) and combined it with activated charcoal (an ingredient found in a variety of non-personal care products in Japan), becoming one of the first brands to harness the benefits of activated charcoal and volcanic ash.

Products in over 30 countries

Unlike many other independent natural product brands, James was quick to expand the brand's reach far beyond the borders of the United Stales. Soon Giovanni would have products in over 30 countries around the world.

His worldwide reach would drive further product innovation inspired by international customers and their homelands. No longer were James and his father visiting Los Angeles' Chinatown to find exotic herbs and essential oils. James was now searching all over the world for the perfect raw ingredients to develop the Giovanni line.

Giovanni not only expands within natural products stores, it continues lo meet the needs of consumers throughout a variety of channels.

2014

Giovanni's products can be found in Embassy Suite hotel rooms across the country for guests to enjoy.

2018

Giovanni partners with Peanuts and Snoopy for limited-edition production in Japan.
